London 2012 - Where will your Utility Warehouse business be in Four Years Time?

Good Morning All,

What an amazing Olympic fortnight with many great athletes from the UK and beyond reaching new heights of excellence. Whilst I was sat there watching the closing ceremony I was left thinking about where will I be and what will I be doing in 2012. The actions and steps I can take right now this week, this month, this year and every week, month & year up to 2012 will have a profound affect on my life.

Last Friday 22nd August 2007 was the 1st anniversary of Sylvia and I joining Utility Warehouse. In those 12 months I feel I have achieved as much I deserved given the time and effort I put into the business. To be honest the latter part of 2007 I was focused on my property business and other income opportunities and Utility Warehouse came a distant 4th, 5th or 6th even. However in January / February of 2008 I decided to make UW a higher priority in my life and where you focus is where you grow. In between everything else I make time every day to do something no matter how small to grow my Utility Warehouse business. It could be any or all of the following:-

  • Speak to someone about being a customer and/or distributor
  • Speak to a team member
  • Speak to someone in my upline
  • Give out DVD(s)
  • Give out Independence(s)
  • Give out business cards
  • Email a contact about the business
  • Send a text a recruiting text
  • Look our for local networking event(s)

Even with my haphazard efforts in this business the team as of last weekend had grown to 52 distributors.

What could I have achieved if I had been a little more focused?

There have been many little celebrations along the way all of which helped me move forward.

  • Signing up for the Business (I had been asked at least three times before to join - timing is everything)
  • College of Excellence
  • I did loads of Martinis (50) my 1st week in the business god only knows what people thought I was on about!
  • College of Excellence of Business
  • COP
  • 1st Presentation (less said the better)
  • 1st Customer (You need to be your own best customer)
  • 2nd Customer (Thanks Mum & Dad)
  • 1st Distributor (Thanks Tony)
  • QE Qualification
  • Flying Club (12 Customers)
  • 1st QE in TEAM (Andy)
  • Group Hit 50
  • 2nd QE in TEAM (Philip)
  • 3rd QE in TEAM (Darren)
  • SE Qualification
  • 50th Distributor in Team (Thanks Emily)
  • 51st (Mike)
  • 52nd (Carl)

Next Step is ED. With 34 days to Express Day it's a long shot but I will still be going for it.

If you have not seen the following video yet please put aside a few minutes about why you should take this business seriously:-

(I watch this video once a month to keep me on track)

When was the last time you listened to Jim Rohn's 'Build You Network Marketing Business' CD? I listened to it everyday to at least the 1st month in the business. I will listen to it once a week in the car forever.

Have you logged onto Networker Plus
a gold mine of information and free to register and use.

Recently I listened to two great speakers at our property event and some other great people in the property business and they all agreed on one thing in any business or any endevaour its the old 80/20 rule. 20% of your success will be down to stratergy and 80% will be down to mind-set. 80% of everything that you do will be down to what's going on between your ears. When you hear the likes of Rob Moore, Simon Zutshi, Vanish Patel, Glenn Armstrong, Nick Pedrithes all repeat the same mantra you know there is something in it. With that in mind I recommend the following three steps to success:-

Sylvia & I went to an amazing event in autumn 2006 the effects of which we are still feeling the benefits in 2008. It took our mindset and shook it so that it would never ever be the same again. If you can make it this autumun either London or Dublin then go. I promise you it will have a profound effect on the way you think and in return all aspects of your life. Book now:-

Do Price Comparison Sites Work?

Jeff Howell on the rigmarole of using energy comparison services

One of the most confusing things about the privatisation of the public utilities is that we are now all obliged to choose which energy supplier we buy our electricity and gas from. The energy market has been "opened up to competition", and consumer choice is now the name of the game. Most people would prefer a quiet life; to stick with the electricity and gas suppliers they have always had and hope to be given a fair deal. But in the brave new world of consumer choice, this is no longer an option. The half of all energy customers who have stayed with their original suppliers (British Gas and the local electricity company) are reckoned to be paying 20 to 30 per cent more than those who have switched. Energy suppliers, like banks, offer their best rates to new customers, and loyalty seems to be rewarded by being fleeced.

The recommended way to switch suppliers is to use the internet (although readers without internet access can still avail themselves of a good switching service, using a freephone telephone number - see below). The problem with the many website comparison services, however, is that they make their money from the energy companies, who pay them commission fees (from £20 to £50 a time) to deliver new customers. They rarely point this out, and if they do, it is usually in the very small print, or on an obscure separate page of the website, accessed only by clicking on a special link.

So when an energy-comparison website claims to be independent and impartial, it is possible that this is not entirely true, and that it has a financial incentive to direct you to switch to the energy provider that pays it the most commission. The result is that if you type your postcode and energy consumption details into three or four comparison websites, you might well find that you come up with three or four different recommendations, with each of the energy companies in question allegedly offering the best deal each time.

Which energy provider is cheapest for you depends on a number of factors, including location (postcode), energy consumption and method of payment. But it is clear that not all of the websites list all of the available providers.

For example, for most medium-use customers who pay by monthly direct debit, the cheapest electricity and gas is likely to be from Utility Warehouse, but some of the switching services do not list the company. They say this is because Utility Warehouse has an agent-based recruiting network, and does not provide them with its latest price tariffs. Utility Warehouse says it is because it refuses to pay them commission. Similarly, for low energy users who prefer to pay quarterly by cheque, Equipower/Equigas is likely to be the best option, but this company also is not listed by all the comparison services.

Even when two of the websites agree on the names of the cheapest energy providers, they are unlikely to give the same figures for the estimated savings to be gained from switching to them. The whole system is baffling. Maybe it is designed to be so. After all, what would be the point of providing choice, if there were only one obvious answer?

Scottish & Southern Energy and E.ON customers to pay more for gas

Customers of Scottish & Southern Energy and E.ON are to pay more for their gas and electricity.

Scottish & Southern Energy is to increase its gas prices for residential customers by 29.2pc and power by 19.2pc from Monday.

The announcement comes four hours after rival E.ON raised gas prices 26pc and electricity by 16pc for four million customers.

Both companies blamed soaring wholesale energy prices over the past year.

German owned E.ON has around 5.5m customers in Britain but more than a quarter are not affected because they are covered by price protection schemes.

E.ON cites a 51pc rise in wholesale prices since January as the reason for the latest increase in bills. Falling oil prices have raised hopes that a further jump would provide some relief but the Norwegian pipeline setback is raising doubts.

Wholesale gas and electricity prices have risen sharply in the last two days following a leak in a Norwegian gas pipeline that could reduce supplies to Britain this winter. Unless they fall again fuel bills may rise further as a result.

Graham Bartlett, managing director of E.ON's retail business, said: "I'm very aware of the effect that today's announcement will have on our customers and I recognise that this is a very tough time for everyone.

"This was not an easy decision to take and we've tried to keep these increases as low as possible while protecting as many customers as we can."

E.ON estimates the typical customer buying both gas and electricity from the company will pay an extra 62p a day but claims they could still save £58 a year compared with British Gas tariffs.

New schemes being introduced by the company to avoid a drift of customers include capping prices until July 2010 and a free energy saving monitor to help customers track their electricity consumption.

E.ON is the third large utility in Britain to raise its household energy prices for the second time this year in response to soaring wholesale energy prices.

French supplier EDF Energy was the first to increase its prices for the second time this year when it put up its gas prices by 22pc and power by 17pc in late July.

British Gas owner Centrica raised its gas prices by 35pc and electricity by 9pc less than a week later and more big bill increases are expected before winter.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, Energy Supply Director of Scottish & Southern Energy, said: "Global demand for all types of energy has risen steeply and supplies of finite resources like oil and gas are under intense pressure,"

The increases will not apply to customers on SSE's social tariff, energyplus care, until the end of the forthcoming winter period at the earliest, the company said.

Now another blow: Families face 14% gas price hike after major pipeline leak

Families face even higher energy bills this winter following a massive rise in the price of gas.

A leak in a key Norwegian pipeline has sent the wholesale price of supplies to the UK soaring by 14 per cent, raising fears of winter shortages.

The firm in charge of the North Sea pipeline said it could be shut down until next spring.

The news will come as another major blow to cash-strapped households, who have suffered big rises in food and energy bills over the past year.

British Gas recently announced another 35 per cent increase, with rival EDF upping bills by as much as 22 per cent.

The latest price jump underscores Britain's growing dependence on overseas gas suppliers as North Sea reserves dwindle.

About 40 per cent of the gas used here will be imported this year, up from 27 per cent in 2007.

The UK is highly exposed to even the smallest supply disruptions because it lacks adequate storage, with only 13 days of stocks compared to 99 in Germany and 122 in France.

Experts warned that unless wholesale prices fall soon, major suppliers will be forced to put up their charges again.

Analyst David Hunter, of energy consultancy McKinnon&Clarke, said: 'The amount of gas available for export from Norway will be cut significantly. The UK will be left to negotiate with Russia and the Far East or risk running low on energy.'

The prospect of another rise in bills will provoke anger as energy companies are currently posting record profits on the back of increases in the price of crude oil.

British gas owner Centrica saw profits at its gas fields in the North Sea rise from £123million to £638million in the last six months, while its gas supply arm brought in a profit of £992million.

Meanwhile, the average British Gas 'dual fuel' bill - for both gas and electricity - is already above £1,300 a year. This is up by more than £400 since January.

A spokesman for watchdog Energywatch warned last night: 'There'll be no respite for consumers from higher energy bills.

'For the four suppliers who haven't raised prices for the second time this year (nPower, E.on, Scottish&Southern Energy and Scottish Power) it's now a matter of how much they will increase bills and when.'

While Centrica and its rivals are cashing in from household bills, more and more Britons are falling into fuel poverty, which is defined as spending over ten per cent of disposable income on heat and light.

There are already an estimated 4.5million in fuel poverty, but the figure is expected to rise by at least a million this winter.

'UK consumers really could have done without this,' said Damien Cox, senior energy analyst, at John Hall Associates, an independent energy consultancy.

'It's not a serious supply issue at the moment because demand in August is low but it does raise the likelihood of problems this winter.'

Centrica spokesman Mish Tullar said last night: 'Norway has the capability to provide 25 per cent of the UK's gas, but at this stage we can't tell the scale of the impact from the leak.'

The pipeline where the leak was found pumps gas from the Kvitebjoern field in the North Sea.

An estimated five per cent of Norway's total gas output goes through it.

Pipeline operator Statoil Hydro said the shutdown would impact on its production this year, but gas customers are 'not likely' to be affected.

Historically, the UK has benefited from lower gas prices in the summer, due to domestic overproduction and easily available imports.

But with gas and oil now viewed as scarce resources, there has been more intense competition for supplies from the Continent.

Robert Kiyosaki about Network Marketing

Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki discuss "why you should get started in Network-Marketing, in their book "Why We Want You To Be Rich."

They both go into great detail in Part Five: Chapters 27, 28 and 29. These 3 concise chapters will forever change the way you look at Network-Marketing. They will clear up the myths, and allow you to finally understand how YOU CAN earn the income you deserve, live the life you desire with Utility Warehouse....

Robert Kiyosaki ..." Long term success in life is a reflection of your education, life experience and personal character. Many network-marketing companies provide personal development training in those key areas." ...

Robert Kiyosaki ... "I recommend a network-marketing business. I recommend the industry for people who want to change and get the necessary skills and attitude training to be successful ..."

Juswant Rai ..."That is EXACTLY what Utility Warehouse has to offer!"

Robert Kiyosaki ... "Where could you find a business that will invest the time in YOUR education, your personal development and building your own business? The answer is: most network marketing businesses."

Juswant Rai ... "Once again, the answer is Utility Warehouse!!!"

Robert Kiyosaki ... "So you need to ask yourself, "Do I have what it takes? Am I willing to go beyond my comfort zones? Am I willing to be led and willing to learn to lead? Is there a rich person inside of me, ready to come out?" If the answer is "YES," start looking for a network-marketing business that has a Great Training Program. I would focus less on the products or the compensation plans and more on the education and personal development program the company offers."

Donald Trump ... "Marketing is a powerful tool, and network marketing can increase that power, provided you are self-motivated."

Take Action Today

Morning,

When I (jimmy) write emails , they are really for me but my life experience so far (all 39 years of them on Tuesday) I know that what makes me tick surely must relate to the majority.
There are 3 reasons why people would not want to better their lives.
1. They are Lazy.
2. They are stupid.
3. They don't give a damn.

Every day I wake up excited about what the day ahead is going to bring. Who am I going to meet, where can I go to meet new people. Not having a job I have to plan my week so I can be in places where there are lots of people I can share this exciting business with. I can't just lay around the house all day relaxing , playing tennis and enjoying myself!
I can go out as well and have lots of fun. The reactions I have had over the years when I mention what I do for a living is amazing. Guess what most are negative it's the Uk mentality most people think they re destined to be miserable and poor and do you know what most of them accept that, muppets.
They do the same thing day in day out and expect a different result at the end of the week. That's the first sign of insanity!!!
I have had quite a few come back to me now though, that's because they are short sighted. The old I'm ok I have a great job or I'm really busy attitude has changed for millions with this credit crunch thingy.
I spoke to a real close friend of mine last night who cannot visit me this weekend because he is skint. He was skint 18 years ago when I first met him! What has he done about it nothing. He in a nice way laughs at what I do for a living.
You will do this business for 2 reasons.
1. To avoid a pain.
2. To make a gain.
But whatever reason your success or failings will be down to YOU!!!!!!
There will be plenty of outside influences that will have an impact but it's the internal self motivation every single second of every single day for the rest of your life that will decide if you minimise your regrets.

Right I'm off to a brekky club now and they will all think I'm MAD because I'm paid a six figure income by the best company and business opportunity in the UK and all I have to do is be happy , speak to people and never quit!!
I knew that 7 years ago, If you don't know it yet wake up fast.
Then I'm off to Liverpool to sign up a company that develops bluetooth equipment. I will spend 2 hours in the car speaking to my happy smiley team members. I will spend the rest of the day at Sandbach with 20 happy smiley people on training and the 60 happy smiley people at the Cop tonight.

How fantastic is this business.

Be happy smiley all day, go on practice until it becomes a habit.

Have a wicked Wednesday and make it your best day ever. Speak to EVERYONE who comes within 3 feet of you today. Just smile hand them a card and say ' There you go that's about money

Sharewatch - Telecom Plus

Telecom Plus has issued a very positive update for Q1 to 30 June. This said turnover, profits, customer numbers, new services and new distributor recruitment have all exceeded expectations, leaving the company "extremely comfortable" with broker forecasts.
Customer numbers increased by 7,160 to 225,017 during Q1 and the number of services provided rose by over 26,000 to 618,320, the highest number being added in any of the past six quarters. Cash at the end of June stood at £32.9m and Telecom Plus expects to lift its dividend payment this year to "not less than 17.5p" versus 14p last year.
Telecom Plus said it continues to expect further strong growth driven by a growing number of distributors and the inclement economic conditions that make customers more receptive to switch suppliers. But of course there is a bigger reason not mentioned - that of higher domestic energy prices, which are possibly expected to rise by a third later this year and which leads to windfall margins.
We tipped the shares in March at 236p; still a buy.
No virus found in this incoming message.

Personal Pride

Good morning,
I get excited waiting for the league table to dispatched from head office.
As it arrives on your desktop there must be so many mixed emotions from each and every one of you. Just 6 weeks ago we all put a stake in the ground and made a personal decision that if implemented and action was taken that we would put down the groundings to start building our financial futures. I have a lot of experience in this business now and what I know is that this type of business really highlights your belief , activity and personal pride.
Whenever we see a group photograph the first person we always look for is ourselves. The same will be for and group or list we are part of. When the list comes out each week and you look at your name what is the feeling you get in your stomach and how does that make your facial muscles react. What are the feelings you have when you see your name staring back at you ?
We are all different but this business is a great leveler. Some of the busiest people I know are showing at the top.
I get a few phone calls every week with the excuses!
There will be a few who don't even open the email as they are embarrassed or they quit after the first few weeks.
There are those who are hungry for success and just get inspired no matter where they are on the list.
No matter what is going on there will be some sort of emotion.
The biggest emotion you should strive for is PERSONAL PRIDE.

The Olympics are taking place at the moment and every single person who is taking part has belief they can win. No one of sound mind would ever take part in anything if they didn't believe they didn't have a chance of winning.
Many have trained for 4 years or more to just get there.
Every single athlete will go away with a feeling that will go to their grave with them and that is if they can say I took part and I did my absolute best and I take personal pride in what I achieved. Now when I typed that I had a great feeling! as everyday I do my best at this business not just for myself, but also for you , your team and the company. I also take pride in what I am doing for the new customers and execs that sign.
One thing I do know is that everyday being an active distributor in this awesome business makes me feel very proud.

As we move forward we will take many with us. These next few weeks , months and years are where the active execs will make a serious amount of life changing money which will in turn at a personal level give so many choices in life.
Do not be the person who has negative emotions running through them everyday because of inactivity and personal under achievement.
We all have the same 24 hours everyday.
We are in the same company with the same services, same payment plan and same challenges.
We all have stuff going on at home and in work.
So the same finger of blame or success will point at us all.

The personal pride I believe is the key to every success story no matter how great.

Give it your best every day. Be proud of what you do and enjoy the results and rewards that always follow successful, happy smiley people around wherever they go and whatever they do.

I don't care if I can't spell or I'm no good at grammar. I do my best to help you all and I feel proud to have you all in the same team.

Thanks for making this such an exciting business and the best is yet to come!!!!!!!

Inflation-busting water bill rise

Households have learned of proposed above-inflation water bill hikes after firms submitted their draft business plans to regulator Ofwat.

The UK's largest water and wastewater services company, Thames Water, announced it expects to raise bills by around 3%, excluding annual inflation, each year between 2010 and 2015.

United Utilities, which manages water and wastewater distribution in the North West of England, said customers were set to see their average bills increase slightly more than 2% a year during the five-year period, with inflation also stripped out.

Severn Trent, which has more than eight million customers, said its bills would rise "only slightly above inflation".

The Consumer Council for Water warned that Thames Water had proposed an average bill increase of 16% above the rate of inflation by 2015.

David Bland, chairman of the Consumer Council for Water, London and South East, said: "The proposal of high price increases and more water meters, combined with the rising cost of energy bills, could hurt many households. London has some of the country's poorest areas, and the Government needs to seriously consider ways to help those who cannot afford to pay for their water."

All of the UK's water companies are required to submit their draft investment plans for Ofwat's scrutiny, including how much they expect customers to pay.

Thames Water and United Utilities revealed the bill increases as they outlined aims for multi-billion pound investments in water and sewerage services as well as cost-cutting schemes to drive efficiency.

Yorkshire Water said it would deliver a £1.9 billion investment in return for customers paying less than £2 more a year over the next five years.

But households in Wales are set to avoid above-inflation rises after Welsh Water said its customers would not see annual tariffs increase in "real" terms, when inflation is stripped out.

Are we being legally mugged by the UK government and the energy companies?

All our energy firms are now foreign owned and completely control the UK energy market and our government is full of rhetoric but there is nothing they can do to stop them and to be honest I don’t think they really want to, if this wasn’t the case they would have foreseen the situation and we would have now far greater storage capacity. I mean it’s not as if it sneaked up on them, a blind man with a stick could of foreseen this and we would have been selling them our gas for the last thirty odd years during the winter months at an extravagant price instead of the other way round and since this is not the situation that can only mean they planned it this way or they are completely incompetent.

So ‘We’, as usual the moaning Minnies of Europe will ‘Whine’ but in the end will just put up and eventually shutup!! And why not! We’re use to it .It’s just another cartel and monopoly which we are so good at creating and maintaining, we’re just teaching our neighbours how lucrative it is, legally mugging the British people. Unfortunately it’s hard trying to restrain their total greed; they’re literally foaming at the mouth.

They’re now at the stage of behaving like they’re oil companies, quick to pass on increases in prices, but fail to act when they fall. The price of oil has fallen by a fifth in the past month if you didn’t know and since we are now conveniently informed that gas and oil prices are linked, gas prices should be falling. Instead the Prices defy gravity — they go up, but they never come down.

Gordon Brown’s new consumer advocate, Ed Mayo says that the European energy companies are often owned by the state from which they come and face no competition at home. But unlike our governments past and present they manipulate the market to protect their home market (Awhhh! ain’t that nice of them).

So we’ll just have to look forward to the prospect of paying £100+ a month to heat and light our homes this winter.

Firms 'need fairer energy deals'

UK businesses need to be offered help in dealing with energy companies, the British Chamber of Commerce says.

Firms, especially small and medium sized enterprises, are more vulnerable to exploitation by energy suppliers than domestic customers, the BCC added.

It called on energy regulator Ofgem to examine why businesses must have long term deals with suppliers while other customers can switch every 28 days.

There is no law forcing business suppliers to publish tariffs, it said.

And the BCC added it was wrong that domestic consumers had a "cooling off" period on verbal contracts, while such agreements which were immediately binding for business.

Its director general, David Frost, called for a current probe by Ofgem to hold suppliers to account over the "lack of transparency and fairness" in their dealings with firms.

'Unacceptable'

Watchdog group Energywatch received 32,000 calls every year from businesses seeking help and advice on their energy supplies.

And the BCC said it feared that this demand would not be met when Energywatch became part of a larger body, Customer Focus, from 1 October.

This would leave firms at the "mercy" of suppliers, so a new independent watchdog is needed to handle their energy concerns, the BCC said.

Rising energy bills have added to inflation which, alongside slowing growth, is adding to fears that the UK economy may face recession.

"With the economy slowing and energy bills on the rise it is totally unacceptable that hard-pressed businesses are left so open to exploitation by energy suppliers," Mr Frost said.

UK economy 'worse than thought'

The CBI, the UK's largest employers' organisation, has warned that the UK economy is deteriorating faster than it previously thought.

There was "no doubt that the mood has darkened in the last two or three months," its director general Richard Lambert warned members in a letter.

Forecasters, including the CBI, had been "over-optimistic" about the economic outlook, he added.

High inflation and slowing growth have prompted fears of a possible recession.

A year ago it seemed reasonable to hope that the worst would be over by now. That has not turned out to be the case

Richard Lambert
CBI

The level of inflation - which most analysts expect to surpass 4% when the July figures are released this week - had taken people "by surprise", Mr Lambert said in the letter, seen by the BBC.

And he added that the credit crunch had been "bigger and broader" than first expected.

"A year ago it seemed reasonable to hope that the worst would be over by now. That has not turned out to be the case."

More bosses 'planning job cuts'

Employers expect a gloomy time ahead in the jobs market, with a rise in redundancies accompanied by a downturn in recruitment, a survey suggests.

The survey of 1,200 bosses by KPMG and the Chartered Institute of Personal Development found just 29% plan to hire staff between July and September.

That was down on the figure of 37% recorded in the second quarter of 2008.

And the number of employers planning redundancies has increased from 22% to 27% over the same period.

The era of the candidate's recruitment market is already over, with people in work becoming increasingly anxious that their P45 might soon be on its way

John Philpott
CIPD

The slump in employment plans is "particularly worrying", the report said, because the third quarter is usually buoyant on the back of the wave of recruitment typically seen in September.

The UK economy has begun to slow markedly, but optimists had pointed to the high levels of employment for evidence of its relative strength.

However, employers have cut jobs in the face of rising energy costs, falling consumer confidence and a property slump.

The slowing economy has particularly taken its toll in the financial and property sectors, with home builders cutting thousands of jobs over the past few months.

"The jobs market has been one of the few bright spots in the UK economy, but cracks are appearing in the face of an increasingly uncertain economic outlook," said John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personal Development (CIPD).

"Even if we avoid the scale of jobs fallout suffered in previous downturns, the era of the candidate's recruitment market is already over, with people in work becoming increasingly anxious that their P45 might soon be on its way."

'Finance pressure'

KPMG's chief economist Andrew Smith said that with wages and staffing levels being one of the overheads that firms could control, the employment market was looking "less resilient".

"Companies are now reacting to deteriorating market conditions," he said.

"With sales slowing and input costs rising, but scope to raise prices limited by weakening demand, finances are under pressure."

The latest UK unemployment figures, for the three months to May, put the jobless rate at 5.2% - with 1.62 million people out of work.

The number claiming unemployment benefit rose by 15,500 in June to 840,100 - the biggest jump since December 1992.

There are worries that if more people lose their jobs, the number of people falling behind on mortgages will rise and that house repossessions, which leapt by 48% in the first half of 2008 will become more commonplace.

Inflation could reach 5%

Inflation could reach five per cent, according to leading economists, the Times has reported.

It said they believe rising energy prices could push inflation up almost one per cent to a 16-year high.

According to the paper, George Buckley, chief UK economist at Deutsche Bank, claimed if more energy firms followed British Gas and EDF Energy, CPI inflation would jump 0.9 per cent.

It reported Philip Shaw, UK economist at Investec, said the rise to five per cent could come as soon as next month.

Any inflationary increase would improve the likelihood of the Bank of England recommending a cut in interest rates.

"If the committee were seriously minded to raise rates, now would be the time to do it," commented Vicky Redwood of Capital Economics, the Times said.

At its most recent meeting, most of the Bank's monetary policy committee noted[colon] "the risks to inflation in the medium term were most likely to be balanced by maintaining Bank Rate at 5.0 per cent".

ENERGY PRICES RISING THREE TIMES AS FAST AS WAGES

SNP MSP Jamie Hepburn today said the UK Government must act as he warned that more families will be pushed into fuel poverty.

Figures produced by the Scottish Government show annual household expenditure on gas and electricity in Scotland has increased by 24% over the last four years whilst average household income in Scotland has only risen by 9%.

The figures, which do not reflect the recent price hikes over the last 12 months, were released in a parliamentary answer to Jamie Hepburn and show that between 2003-04 and 2006-07

    • Average annual household expenditure on gas increased from £440 to £560 - an increase of 27%.
    • Electricity costs have increased over the same time frame from £530 per annum to £660 - an increase of 22%.
    • For households using both electricity and gas the combined figures show an increase of 24%
    • In contrast average household income increased by only 9% from £16,500 to £18,100.

Commenting on the figures SNP Central Scotland MSP Jamie Hepburn said;

“With the latest price rises due to hit households hard this winter these figures expose the shocking impact fuel costs have already had on household budgets across Scotland.

“Energy costs are increasing by 3 times as much as household income.

“Without real action on energy prices we will see more and more households pushed into fuel poverty as energy costs eat up household budgets.

“With higher heating and energy usage in Scotland we already have three times as many households in fuel poverty. Without real action by the UK Government this will only get worse.

“It is essential that we see steps taken by the UK Government to ensure social tariffs are the lowest tariffs, that pre-payment customers are no longer hit by rip-off charges and that the winter fuel payment is increased.

“The case for the energy companies to make a contribution to meeting the costs of fuel poverty and to supporting pensioners is compelling.

“These figures show that energy costs are unsustainable not just for the elderly or less well off but across the board.

“The SNP Government has taken strong steps to tackle fuel poverty with a record number of central heating installations last year, plans to extend benefits health checks to all those applying to the Warm Deal programme, and the re-establishment of the Fuel Poverty Forum – but the energy market and energy regulation is reserved. The UK Government must act.”

Will gas prices mean a rate increase?

BRITISH Gas owner Centrica said yesterday it would raise gas prices by a record 35 per cent and electricity prices by 9 per cent as it passes on rising energy costs to householders.

The country’s largest energy supplier, with 16m customers, said the move would take place immediately – after revealing its half-year operating profits from its residential gas business plunged 69 per cent to £166m from a year ago.

Centrica’s price hike comes just a few days after rival EDF Energy put up gas prices by 22 per cent and electricity prices by 17 per cent, with other power firms expected to follow suit.

British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said: “We very much regret that we have had to make this decision at a time when many household budgets are already under pressure.”

Soaring energy prices have cost British Gas an extra £2bn over the last year, leading it to pass on costs to consumers. Analysts said these hikes may further stoke inflation, increasing the pressure on the Bank of England to hike interest rates at a time when it is also trying to head off recessionary pressures.

Capital Economics economist Paul Dales said if other energy suppliers mirror these increases the consumer price index would rise by 0.6 per cent, pushing it from 3.8 per cent to 4.4 per cent in August. Dales said: “The news that British Gas became the second utility supplier to raise its price means that inflation is likely to rise further and faster then we previously expected.”

This could spell further bad news for homeowners and investors looking to renew their mortgages.

Hikes raise concerns over fuel poverty

Average household British Gas bill will rise by £400 to more than £1,300 a year.

THE latest round of energy price hikes has piled further pressure on household budgets.
The average British Gas bill will rise by £400 to just over £1,300 a year after it increased gas and electricity prices by an average of 35 and 9 per cent respectively, following a similar move last week by EDF.

ScottishPower, Eon, Npower and Scottish & Southern Energy – set to follow suit in the next few days, households across the UK face steep fuel price increases.

For every 10 per cent increase, it's estimated that 400,000 more households fall into fuel poverty (defined as when more than 10 per cent of household income is spent on fuel bills).

Energywatch Scotland estimates that even before the latest rises, about 650,000 Scots households were below the fuel poverty line. But while alleviating the strain entirely is unrealistic, it's still possible for most households to ease the burden.

Regardless of price rises, customers can save money by switching to the best deal on the market. The average customer who has not previously switched supplier can save around £250 a year, claims Confused.com.

Switching is a simple and quick process. On most switching sites, you need to enter your postcode and various details of your present current gas and electricity bills to get a list of the tariffs available in your area.

The list will typically include price, savings, power ratings and the type of package (such as dual fuel or capped) and you can then apply online for the best deal.

With prices on a long-term upward trend, capped or fixed-rate deals offer protection from future increases. Nearly three million British Gas customers are unaffected by the latest rises, either because they are locked into fixed-rate deals or they are among the 340,000 customers considered vulnerable and, therefore, shielded from price hikes until 2009.

"While online tariffs still offer the market-leading deals, these products are variable and are at risk to further price hikes," said Scott Byrom, utilities manager at comparison website money supermarket.com. "For those less willing to gamble, a fixed tariff is by far the best option."

However, Byrom added that with prices rising and providers, including ScottishPower, taking attractive fixed-deals off the market, those on offer now may not be available for long.

Fixed-rate tariffs can be up to 15 per cent more expensive than variable tariffs, but with other suppliers likely to follow British Gas with hikes of up to 35 per cent, they represent a good deal.

Providers yet to announce price rises that still have fixed or capped rates on offer include Eon and ScottishPower, although these might disappear quickly, warned Andrew Hagger, communications manager at Moneynet.co.uk. "You will find that most energy suppliers will offer their lowest variable prices if you opt for a combination of online billing and dual fuel," Hagger added.

The latest increases from British Gas, described by energy helpline.com as the "biggest energy price rise in history", mean it has the most expensive standard tariff on the market, at £1,300 a year or £110 a month. But it still has the most competitive deal across the whole market, with the Click Energy 5 tariff. At £845 a year this saves households £40 a month compared with the standard rate.

But such savings are increasingly insufficient and the latest round of increases sparked calls for more help for vulnerable households. "It looks as if it's set to be a long, hard winter, and there is always the concern that the elderly will be scared to put their heating on, which could have serious consequences," said Hagger.

"The government needs to do something to reassure pensioners and review the level of winter-fuel payments in light of these astronomical price hikes."

VULNERABLE ARE UNABLE TO ACCESS THE BEST DEALS

One of the chief weapons against energy price hikes is switching to a better deal.

But this isn't always an option for households below the fuel poverty line – of which there are at least 650,000 in Scotland, according to Energywatch – as those with energy debts cannot switch.
